I’m Home Dear

Every wanted your technology to know you are in the house. I did so I could automatically turn off my motion sensing camera.

They  email a picture of whatever trips them. Anyway when I’m in the house I’d rather they didn’t.

Ok, so using a nice new shiny Raspberry PI 3 with its built in bluetooth and a bit of python code later which scans for bluetooth IDs I can now do it.

So what happens is

Raspberry PI 3 scans every 15 seconds for bluetooth IDs that it knows. Works even if they are set to be only visible to paired devices.

If it spots a Bluetooth ID that it recognises it updates a mysql database status and logs the change.

The motion detecting cameras, thanks SB Components, now looks up that database and if any of the know IDs are marked as in then it doesn’t bother to take pictures.

First Post

First post.

I’m going to use this blog to keep track of some of my technical projects and perhaps a bit of politics.

This blog is actually hosted on a Raspberry PI 2 inside my firewall/router.

I Have DNS and DHCP running on another pair of Raspberry PI 2 and the fourth is used for controlling a few power points that control when the lights and CO2 go on and off on my nano fish tanks (no fish in the tanks just plants currently).
